What counts as a request

Metering you can predict before you write the code.
Counts as 1Any call that authenticates with a key, however much it returns. One country for one year and every country for a decade both cost one request. A call that fails because of a malformed parameter or an unknown measure counts too, so check the docs before you loop.Not countedA call refused before it runs: a missing or revoked key, or a 429 for being over the ceiling. Reads on this website are never metered; only the API is.Not yetConditional requests. The API does not send ETags today, so a repeat call is a new request. Cache on your side: the dashboard shows which routes you call most.

Go over your ceiling and we do not bill you for it. You get 429 and the month’s count resets on the first. Nothing on this site can charge you money without you choosing a plan first.

Before you commit

Do I need a plan to use the numbers?No. Everything published on this site is free to read, chart and quote under CC BY 4.0, with attribution, and source data keeps its own licence. A plan is only for calling the API.
Do I need a card to start?No. Create an account and you have 1,000 requests a month with one key. Every plan reaches the same endpoints and the same data; a card comes in only when you upgrade.
What happens when I hit a limit?The API answers 429 and nothing is billed. For the per-minute limit, wait and retry with backoff. The monthly ceiling resets on the first of the month, or sooner if you change plan.
Is the free tier time-limited?No. It is a permanent tier, not a trial. Nothing on this site can charge you without you choosing a plan first.
Can I upgrade, downgrade, or cancel?Yes, from the dashboard's billing section, which hands you to Stripe's portal. Check the effective date it shows before confirming. A cancellation returns the workspace to Free at the end of the paid period.
Is the data different on paid plans?No. Plans differ in the monthly ceiling, the per-minute limit and the number of keys. Coverage still varies by country and dataset, and the site says where.
Can I use the data in a commercial product?Commercial use is subject to our Terms and to the terms of each underlying dataset. For public republication, attribute the original source; the source field on every observation names it.
